Can my baby have oranges?

A quick, age-by-age answer with how to serve it safely. Checked against AAP.

Under 6 months? Most babies aren’t ready for solids before 6 months. Talk to your pediatrician before introducing any food this early.
Under 6 monthsNot yet

Most babies start solids around 6 months.

Citrus is fine to introduce once solids begin. The old advice to delay citrus for allergy reasons is outdated.

How to serve: Wait for solids readiness.

6 months to 1 yearSafe with prep

Fine from 6 months, with the membranes off.

The tough membrane around each segment is hard for young babies to manage. The acid can also cause a flat red rash around the mouth, which is usually irritation, not an allergy. Raised hives, swelling, vomiting, or trouble breathing are different: call your pediatrician.

How to serve: Peel segments and remove the membrane and any seeds, or smash the segment flat. A flat face rash from the juice looks alarming and is almost always harmless.

1 year and upSafe

Peel, segment, and serve.

Toddlers handle orange segments well. Seedless varieties like clementines are the easy option. A flat acid rash around the mouth is common and usually harmless; hives or swelling are a different story and worth a call to your pediatrician.

How to serve: Cut segments in half for younger toddlers if the membranes are tough.
