Can my baby have sunflower oil?
A quick, age-by-age answer with how to serve it safely. Checked against AAP, AAAAI, FDA, CDC.
Most babies start solids around 6 months.
A little cooking oil can be part of your baby’s food once solids begin. Before readiness, nothing needs to be added.
How to serve: Wait for solids readiness.
Fine for cooking. Use a little.
Sunflower oil is an unsaturated vegetable oil that works for cooking baby foods. Sunflower is not one of the nine major US allergens, and the amount of seed protein in sunflower oil is expected to be very low. If your child has had a reaction to sunflower seeds or sunflower seed butter, ask your allergist before using sunflower oil. This is about the oil only: whole sunflower seeds and spoonfuls of sunflower seed butter are choking hazards for young children.
How to serve: Cook vegetables, eggs, or fish in a small amount of plain oil, with no added salt or flavoring.
Fine for cooking. Skip the deep-fried foods.
Sunflower oil is an unsaturated vegetable oil, the kind of fat AAP encourages over saturated fat. AAP suggests keeping fried foods, especially fried takeout, occasional for toddlers. If your child has a sunflower seed allergy, ask your allergist about sunflower oil. Whole sunflower seeds and spoonfuls of sunflower seed butter stay choking hazards until about age 4.
How to serve: Sauté, roast, or bake with a small amount of plain oil. Keep fried takeout foods rare.
Fine for cooking at any age.
No age limit on sunflower oil used in cooking. Fried foods are still best kept occasional. If your child has a sunflower seed allergy, your allergist can say whether sunflower oil is okay.
