Can my baby have mushrooms?

A quick, age-by-age answer with how to serve it safely. Checked against AAP, CDC.

Under 6 months? Most babies aren’t ready for solids before 6 months. Talk to your pediatrician before introducing any food this early.
Under 6 monthsNot yet

Most babies start solids around 6 months.

Cooked mushrooms can join the menu once solids begin. Store-bought only, at every age.

How to serve: Wait for solids readiness.

6 months to 4 yearsSafe with prep

Cooked and chopped, from the store. Never foraged.

Well-cooked mushrooms are soft and easy to eat. Raw mushroom is rubbery and hard for young children to chew. And one absolute rule at every age: only store-bought mushrooms. Wild mushrooms can be deadly, and young children account for a meaningful share of mushroom poisonings.

How to serve: Cook until fully tender and chop small, or serve a wide strip of well-cooked portobello for a young baby to grip. Raw mushroom waits until about age 4.

4 years and upSafe

Cooked freely. Raw slices are okay now.

From about age 4, thin slices of raw button mushroom are manageable, though cooked stays easier to digest. Foraged mushrooms stay off the menu for everyone without an expert.
