Can my baby have whole tree nuts?

A quick, age-by-age answer with how to serve it safely. Checked against CDC, AAP.

Under 6 months? Most babies aren’t ready for solids before 6 months. Talk to your pediatrician before introducing any food this early.
Under 4 yearsSafe with prep

Not whole, but you can introduce them ground or as butter.

Whole nuts are a leading choking hazard until age 4. The allergen itself can and should be introduced earlier, just not in whole form.

How to serve: Use smooth nut butter thinned into food, finely ground nuts, or nut flour from around 6 months. Whole nuts wait until age 4.

Wait until 4+, then only if this child chews well.

From age 4, whole nuts can be considered only if this child chews well. Supervise while eating. Many families still wait closer to 5.

How to serve: Supervise closely. Offer whole only if this child chews well; otherwise keep using butters or finely ground forms.
