Can my baby have fruit juice?

A quick, age-by-age answer with how to serve it safely. Checked against AAP.

Under 1 yearNot yet

Skip juice in the first year, even 100% juice.

Juice offers no benefit over whole fruit for infants and can displace breast milk or formula. It is linked to dental decay and excess weight.

How to serve: Offer whole, soft fruit instead. It has the fiber juice lacks.

1 year and upIntroduce with care

A small amount only, and whole fruit is better.

After 12 months, juice is best limited to a small daily amount of 100% juice. Whole fruit remains the better choice.

How to serve: Keep it to a small cup, serve it with a meal, and prefer whole fruit.

Sources: AAP. This is general guidance, not medical advice. Ask your pediatrician about your child.
