Can my baby have added sugar?

A quick, age-by-age answer with how to serve it safely. Checked against USDA Dietary Guidelines, AAP.

Under 6 months? Most babies aren’t ready for solids before 6 months. Talk to your pediatrician before introducing any food this early.

Avoid added sugar before age 2.

The AAP and USDA recommend no added sugar before age 2. It has no nutritional value, can displace nutrient-dense foods, and builds a preference for very sweet flavors. Natural sugar in whole fruit is fine.

How to serve: Sweeten with mashed fruit instead. Check labels on yogurt, cereal, and snacks.

Keep it minimal after age 2.

From age 2, keep added sugar to a minimum, well under 25 grams a day. Whole fruit remains the better way to satisfy a sweet tooth.

How to serve: Watch labels and treat sweets as occasional, not daily.
