Can my baby have cheerios?

A quick, age-by-age answer with how to serve it safely. Checked against CDC, AAP.

Under 6 months? Most babies aren’t ready for solids before 6 months. Talk to your pediatrician before introducing any food this early.
Under 6 monthsNot yet

Most babies start solids around 6 months.

O-shaped oat cereal earns its spot once solids begin. Before readiness, nothing needs to be on the tray.

How to serve: Wait for solids readiness.

Soften them until the pincer grasp arrives.

Plain O-shaped oat cereal softens fast with saliva, which makes it one of the safer early finger foods. Before the pincer grasp develops, around 9 months, whole dry rings are hard for a baby to pick up and manage. One hard rule under 1: plain only, because honey-sweetened varieties contain real honey, and the no-honey rule covers honey in processed foods too.

How to serve: Soften the rings in breast milk, formula, or water until they squish, and stir them into yogurt or oatmeal. Plain only. No honey or flavored varieties under 12 months.

9 months to 1 yearSafe with prep

The classic pincer-grasp food. Plain only.

Dry plain oat rings dissolve quickly and are a favorite self-feeding food from about 9 months. The one hard rule: honey-sweetened varieties stay off the menu until 12 months, because the no-honey rule includes honey baked into processed foods.

How to serve: Serve a few plain rings at a time on the tray. Honey and flavored varieties wait until after the first birthday.

An easy snack from here. Plain still wins.

Plain O-shaped cereal is a fine everyday snack. Sweetened varieties are added sugar, which the AAP recommends avoiding before age 2 and keeping minimal after.

How to serve: Plain as the default. Treat sweetened versions as an occasional extra from age 2, not a pantry staple.
