Can my baby have barley?
A quick, age-by-age answer with how to serve it safely. Checked against AAP, USDA WIC.
Most babies start solids around 6 months.
Barley cereal was a classic first food for generations. It can rejoin the rotation once solids begin.
How to serve: Wait for solids readiness.
An underrated first grain. Cook it soft.
Barley is gentle, fiber-rich, and much lower in arsenic than rice, which makes it a smart rotation partner. The prep matters: whole pearl barley stays chewy unless it is cooked well past tender, and firm grains are hard for young children to grind. Barley contains gluten, so if celiac disease runs in the family, talk to your pediatrician about timing.
How to serve: Iron-fortified barley cereal works from the start of solids. Cook whole pearl barley very soft, and save it for babies already handling textured food, around 9 months and up.
Any barley, any way, from age 4.
By age 4 texture stops being the issue. Barley stays a good rotation partner so rice is not the everyday grain.
