Can my baby have white fish?
A quick, age-by-age answer with how to serve it safely. Checked against FDA/EPA, AAP.
Most babies start solids around 6 months.
Mild white fish like cod and haddock are among the gentlest first fish, and fish is a top 9 allergen worth introducing deliberately once solids begin.
How to serve: Wait for solids readiness.
A gentle first fish. Cook it, flake it, watch.
Cod, haddock, pollock, tilapia, flounder, and sole are all low-mercury "best choices" per FDA/EPA. Fish is a top 9 allergen, so offer a small amount and watch for a reaction the first few times. Serve it fully cooked; raw or undercooked fish waits until at least age 5.
How to serve: Cook until it flakes, break it into small soft pieces, and run your fingers through to catch stray bones. About two child-size servings of low-mercury fish a week is the FDA/EPA rhythm.
